Missing hiker found; Civil Air Patrol assists
Law enforcement and the Civil Air Patrol team up to find a missing hiker who spent nearly 18 hours outside in cold temperatures while hiking near Wisconsin Dells.
The 59-year-old Diana Haley from Middleton called the Sauk County Sheriff’s Department from her cell phone at around 7:40 p.m. Saturday, October 10, to report she had become lost in the Baxter Hollow Preserve.
Civil Air Patrol officials say members of the 153rd Squadron, which includes staff from La Crosse and Eau Claire, were called to assist other area law enforcement, canine units and fire departments.
Rescue crews searched until 3:30 a.m. Sunday, October 11, before calling off the search until sunrise.
Temperatures dipped into the mid-20’s during the overnight, and Haley was not properly dressed for the weather. She also did not have food, or water with her.
Haley was eventually found later in the morning by rescue crews, who used whistles to alert her they were nearby.
Rescue crews say Haley was cold when they found her, but was not hurt.
