UDF Training and MORE!!
Posted by Capt Cathy Collom in Cadet Programs, Commanders Corner, Emergency Services, Public Affairs on 7 June 2010
This weekend members, mostly from Mt. Vernon Composite Squadron, participated in an all day Urban Direction Finding (UDF) class. It started out with instructing members on the proper forms to bring to a search and rescue, either real or practice, reviewing each member’s 24 hour pack, and an inspection of a vehicle that had a vital piece of equipment missing, just to make sure we were inspecting the vehicle correctly!
Class continued under the expert guidance of Maj David Fitchitt and Maj Paul Cianciolo. At the same time, the National Capital Wing Commander, Col Richard Cooper, Mt Vernon Composite Squadron Commander Capt Cathy Collom, and 1st Lt Anson Calmes went over to the main area of Ft Belvoir to see the Red Cross display. The Red Cross incident commander personally offered to came over to the UDF class, brought other Red Cross members in one of the Red Cross emergency vehicles, met the volunteers, thanked them for their efforts and discussed the opportunity of Red Cross and National Capital Wing working together. PLUS, while they were there, the Red Cross gave each CAP member a Red Cross emergency kit worth over $100 and explained how each piece could be used during an emergency situation. Pictures and interviews were done with CAP members so the Red Cross can share with the public how important CAP, its members, and the assistance they provide the Red Cross is.
The rest of the day included practice working with maps, practice ramp checks, reporting to a “mission base” regarding findings, disarming practice ELT’s, hands on practice of locating practice ELT’s, and other tasks required on the UDF task list. It was a great day, and those that missed out….REALLY MISSED OUT!!

Tune up your Search and Rescue skills!!
Posted by Capt Cathy Collom in Commanders Corner, Emergency Services, Upcoming Activities on 27 April 2010
The National Capital Wing will be holding a Search and Rescue Exercise (SAREX) on Saturday, May 1, 2010. The mass briefing goes at 8:00 am SHARP. All members wishing to train and advance their credentials and experience will meet at Davison Army Airfield, at the flightline building (follow the brown informational signs which say, “PASSENGER TERMINAL” to Base Operations–with the flag pole and cannon in front–and meet at the one-story white building behind and to the right of it). Opportunities exist for training in air crew, ground team, and mission base staff. Members must have at least a GES qualification. Bring your member ID card, 101 card, and a complete CAP uniform. The training will not be oriented around a scenario (missing plane, lost hiker, etc) but task-based, so be ready to train!

Welcome to our New Web Site
Posted by Capt Cathy Collom in Commanders Corner, Public Affairs on 28 January 2010
Welcome to the new Web site of Civil Air Patrol’s Mt. Vernon Composite Squadron!
Whether you are new to CAP or have been a member for a long time, the information available about our organization and what it has to offer can get overwhelming at times. My goal as the squadron commander is to provide a guide to the areas you might be interested in, help you find what you are looking for, and maybe even discover areas about CAP you never knew before.
Take your time and look around. Please be patient as this site is still in it’s early stages of development. If there is something you think should be added that would be of use to you or others, please leave a comment here, and we’ll look into adding it.
As with anything else related to Civil Air Patrol, constructing this Web site is a learning process for those of us developing it. Hopefully it has helped you with questions you might have had. I look forward to hearing your comments!
