NEWS: NORAD exercise planned for Washington, D.C.

TYNDALL AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. — The North American Aerospace Defense Command and its geographical component, the Continental United States NORAD Region, will conduct a one-day exercise, Falcon Virgo 09-07, May 15 in the National Capital Region, Washington, D.C.

The exercise comprises a series of training flights held in coordination with the Federal Aviation Administration, the National Capital Region Command Center, the Joint Air Defense Operations Center, the Continental U.S. NORAD Region, Civil Air Patrol, U.S. Coast Guard and CONR's Western Air Defense Sector.

NEWS: Civil Air Patrol processor adapted for Tactical Satellite-3

KIRTLAND AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. (AFMC) — What do Civil Air Patrol planes have in common with Tactical Satellite-3?

Both utilize the same onboard processing.

Adapted for functionality in the cosmos for the upcoming TacSat-3 mission by Space Computer Corp., Los Angeles, Calif., and the Air Force Research Laboratory's Space Vehicles Directorate here and Sensors Directorate, Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio, the Airborne Real-time Cueing Hyperspectral Enhanced Reconnaissance system has been employed by the Civil Air Patrol for search and rescue, homeland security and disaster impact appraisal and aid operations.

NEWS: $6,000 pledged to wing through CFC

WASHINGTON — Civil Air Patrol’s National Capital Wing, a nonprofit organization serving the D.C. area, is slated to receive nearly $6,000 from the 2008 Combined Federal Campaign of the National Capital Area.

“These funds will help us provide scholarships for cadets, educate youth about the dangers of drug use, supply new search and rescue equipment and train our volunteers,” said National Capital Wing Commander Col. Richard Cooper. “Your generous contributions will go a long way in supporting our missions in the Washington, D.C., metro area,”

INFO: Cadet Basic Encampment Applications

INFO: Combat Control Orientation Course

March 26, 2009
A one-week introduction to the rigorous missions of Air Force combat controllers and the special tactics unit is being offered July 19-25 by Civil Air Patrol North Carolina Wing's Fayetteville Composite Squadron at Fort Bragg and Pope AFB, N.C. In this course, students will be exposed to the history of Combat Control, military parachute operations, weapons familiarization, air traffic control procedures, close air support operations, rappelling and high angle rope work, and Air Force Special Tactics techniques and procedures. The application deadline for cadets and officers is June 4.

NEWS: Col. August "Bill" Schell, CAP National Curator, passes away

March 26, 2009
ABERDEEN, Md – Col. August William (Bill) Schell of Aberdeen, Md., passed away at his home March 23. Schell served as the national curator for the Civil Air Patrol, working tirelessly to preserve CAP history. Schell was 79 years old and joined CAP as a cadet in 1944.
